SEPTEMBER 22: THE MARTYRS OF THE THEBAN LEGION Saint Mauritius, Saint Candidus, Saint Exuperius, Saint Victor, and companions Martyrs Died: 286 --- These soldiers, belonging to the "Theban" legion of Maximian Herculeus, were exterminated because they refused to go to Gaul to persecute Christians. Some soldiers of the legion refused to celebrate in honor of the gods and were martyred. It is said that they numbered six thousand six hundred and sixty-six men who were martyred en masse.

A NUN WHO WAS SEXUALLY ASSAULTED Servant of God Maria Isabel Bogota Baquero --- Today is the death anniversary of the Servant of God Maria Isabel Bogota Baquero. She was a Colombian nun from the Carmelites of Mother Candelaria. She was assigned to serve in a nursing home in Venezuela. She manifested a great love for God in the service of the poorest and most needy. She was attacked in the dining area. The men sexually assaulted and killed her. She is being considered as a possible martyr of chastity.

SEPTEMBER 21: A PRINCESS CONVERTED BY MATTHEW Saint Ephigenia of Abyssinia Early Christian Died: 1st century --- She was an Ethiopian who, legends say, was converted by St. Matthew the apostle. It is said that she was a princess and her being steadfast in remaining a virgin led to the martyrdom of St. Matthew. The Carmelites in Spain have a special devotion to her, that is why she is depicted wearing their habit, but she’s not a Carmelite. Her name appeared in the previous editions of the Roman Martyrology, but not in the most recent one.

SEPTEMBER 21: HE WAS KILLED BY HIS GODFATHER Saint Gerulf of Tronchiennes Teenager and Martyr Died: 746 --- He was a young Flemish martyr. Some accounts say that he was only 18 years old at the time of his martyrdom. He had just received the sacrament of Confirmation when a man stabbed him with a knife to death. Some say that the assailant was a relative, others say that it was his confirmation godfather who killed him. The man was jealous of the piety that Gerulph had shown in receiving confirmation. Gerulph died forgiving the man.

SEPTEMBER 20: CONVERTED BY A CROSS BETWEEN ANTLERS Saint Eustachius Placidus Martyr Died: 118 --- St. Eustace was a general of a Roman army. He became Christian after a hunting trip where he saw a vision of a glowing cross between the antlers of a stag. He was dismissed from service. His wife and children were taken from him. He was recalled to duty to fight the barbarians. When he and his family refused to worship the gods, they were thrown to the lions who did not harm them. They were later burned inside a bronze bull.

SEPTEMBER 20: NORTH KOREAN SAINTS Saint Yu Chong-nyul Petrus and Saint U Se-yong Alexius Laypersons and Martyrs Died: 1866 --- There was no North Korea and South Korea yet during the time when the 103 Martyrs of Korea suffered. There was one Korean kingdom. But two of the martyrs were born within what is now North Korean territory. Saint Peter Yu was born in Taphyen, near Pyongyang, and St. Alex U was born in Seoheung, Hwanghae-do. Peter was beaten to death, while Alex was beheaded.

SEPTEMBER 20: THE MARTYRS OF THE HERMIT KINGDOM 103 Canonized Martyrs of Korea Bishops, Priests, Laypersons, and Martyrs Died: 1838-1867 --- Today, we honor the 103 canonized martyrs of Korea led by St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, the first Korean Catholic priest and St. Paul Chong Ha-sang, a Korean seminarian. The group is composed of 1o French missionaries (3 bishops, 7 priests), one Korean priest, and 92 Korean laypersons (some of whom were children). They were all imprisoned, tortured, and killed during the anti-Christian persecution of the Joseon dynasty.

SEPTEMBER 19: THE FIRST URUGUAYAN MARTYRS Blessed Maria Dolores Aguiar-Mella Diaz and Blessed Consuelo Aguiar Mella Diaz Laypersons and Martyrs Died: 1936 --- They were blood sisters who were Uruguayan laypersons. They later moved to Spain with their family. There they became collaborators of the Piarist sisters. During the anti-Catholic Spanish Revolution Maria Dolores got arrested for her Catholic faith. She went to her and asked to be jailed with her and the nuns. They were both shot for being Catholics.
