“Absolute impersonal standards do not fare any better. Such standards exist as abstract principles in some atemporal, unchanging, realm of ideals. Goodness, rightness, wrongness, etc. are then abstract objects that exist wholly apart from the temporal realm. But if this is so what relevance do such standards have to human life? Because such standards are impersonal, they are indifferent to human beings. They are not obligatory in any sense; we have no reason to accept such standards. Also, since these standards exist in some other realm wholly different from our own, there seems to be no reason to think we can have epistemic access to them. How can we come to know about these moral standards? They are, in a sense, rulebooks that exist wholly apart from us and wholly beyond our reach. “Moral obligations and duties are only intelligible within the context of interpersonal relations. One cannot be obligated to an impersonal object. Also, impersonal objects have no obligations. If impersonalism is ultimate, categorical norms cannot exist. Categorical norms are norms that obligate subjects regardless of the subject’s feelings or preferences. If there are things we ought to do, then reality cannot be ultimately impersonal. It has been argued that one cannot derive an ought from an is. That is, we cannot arrive at an understanding of what ought to be the case by examining what is actually the case. If there are genuine oughts (moral obligations, things we should do), then personalism must be fundamental to reality. Furthermore, an impersonal standard of goodness is untenable. Given Christianity, the standard of morality is both absolute and personal. “If the facts are a product of Chance, then they cannot be organized into a system. This issue can be understood as the problem of the “wholly new”. Because of pure contingency and Chance in history, every fact is essentially wholly new. This means that the facts have not been systematized, interpreted, related, or thought of prior to their instantiation. A wholly new fact is a previously unknown fact—unknown by both God and man. If pure contingency is allowed to rule over history, then we must accept the existence and occurrence of wholly new facts. These wholly new facts, precisely because they are wholly new, have no relation to any prior system of facts. Even if at any particular point in time one is able to organize a system of facts, the instantiation of a wholly new fact would render that system impotent. “Due to the disconnection between the events in history caused by pure contingency, the notion of causation becomes meaningless. Cause-and-effect represents a kind of relation between events. But such a relationship is impossible given the unbeliever’s view of history. If we grant Chance and pure contingency, one event cannot be said to cause another. At best, what we experience is a succession of events. Causation implies a necessary connection between cause and effect. But as we have noted, given pure contingency, there is no form of necessity in history. As such, the unbeliever cannot rule out the existence of uncaused events. Things may randomly go in and out of existence uncaused and without explanation. Think about the implications this has for the enterprise of science. “There are a few problems that arise as a result of the unbeliever’s commitment to Chance and indeterminacy in history. The obvious problem being that, if we grant the idea of pure contingency in history, history descends into chaos. There ceases to be any coherence, order, or uniformity in history. This is because, if history is indeterminate, and there is no set course for the events in history—anything is possible. This is the abstract possibility we discussed above. Since the idea of pure contingency implies total contingency to the exclusion of necessity, the occurrence of any event is not necessitated by the events preceding it. If one contingent event occurs (for example, the kicking of a ball), there is an indefinite number of possible events that can succeed it (abstract possibility). Since, given pure contingency, no particular event is necessitated by the previous event,Christian Apologetics

Two Philosophies of HistoryAs mentioned previously, in the Christian worldview, God has a comprehensive plan and purpose for the universe. This plan has existed even before the world was created. Even before the formation of the world, God has exhaustively ordained every event that shall come to pass. God instantiates the events in history according to this preconceived plan and purpose. What can be seen, then, is that a Christian view of history is both teleological and deterministic. Every event that occurs in the world has a larger purpose and meaning. Also, every event that occurs occurs because God willed and ordained it. God is sovereign, hence, there is no single event that occurs outside His control or knowledge. We can say, then, that the Christian worldview affirms a closed universe. History, then, can be seen as the unfolding of the perfect plan of God. There are noChristian Apologetics
