-KENNETH TIONG-[Response to Senior Minister Shanmugam]I have read Senior Minister Shanmugam's comments.I wholeheartedly agree with him that racism has no place in our society. The comments about the Singaporeans missing in Nepal are shameful, and so are the attacks on anyone's motives because of their ethnicity. I condemn them without reservation. Our hearts go out to the victims of the Nepal disaster and to the families waiting for news.I have always said this. Once a person has taken the oath of citizenship, they are part of the Singaporean family and the nation. Any attempt to draw a dividing line between the native-born and the naturalised will fail. It will fail because that is not in the culture or history of this country. -ANDRE LOW-The National Day Rally family package is a meaningful move.It puts more public support behind the years of raising a child, gives children the same baseline support regardless of birth order, expands childcare leave, lowers preschool fees and provides more help to first-timer families.This is a welcome step.The National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) has said that child-directed benefits in the new package will extend across family circumstances. That principle should guide the wider support that shapes stability for single-parent families.Parents also need to be able to use the new leave arrangements in real workplaces, without losing ground in their careers.There is a connection here to the Baby Bonds proposal I raised in Parliament earlier this year: a proposal for a universal invested grant for all Singapore children at birth. We're clear about the duty they carry: to serve and defend the country. What gets discussed less is the responsibility the country carries in return. In my view, that means fair pay for their effort, and using their time in NS, as far as possible, to prepare them for what comes after.That's the thread running through the questions I've raised in Parliament this year. During the Budget debate, I asked that second-year NSFs be paid the Local Qualifying Salary of $1,800 a month, in effect a minimum wage floor. In May, I raised fairer pay and support for servicemen.
