How Sapphire Cases Are Made (And Why They’re So Expensive) . . Sapphire watch cases start as synthetic corundum crystals grown under extremely high temperatures. These crystals form as large blocks, and any temperature instability during growth can create internal stress lines that later cause cracking. Once the crystal is ready, it’s sliced into thin slabs using diamond‑coated saws because sapphire ranks 9 on the Mohs scale — harder than steel, but also brittle. . Machining sapphire is slow and delicate. CNC machines use diamond tools and extremely low feed rates to avoid fractures. Even small vibrations can destroy an entire piece, which is why rejection rates are high. After shaping, the case goes through multiple polishing stages to achieve optical clarity.
