Answer: AThe "Correct the Map" resolution — adopted by the UN General Assembly by a vote of 164 in favour to 1 against (United States).The resolution does not impose a binding world map on UN member states. It's non-binding and explicitly "in no way challenges the use of the Mercator projection for maritime and aerial navigation, for which it remains fully suited."The standard Mercator projection (1569, Gerardus Mercator) distorts area away from the equator — Canada, Russia and Europe swell to 2, 3 and 4 times their true area, and Greenland grows to match a continent 14 times its size. Africa, sitting on the equator, renders close to true size — which is why it looks small by comparison.The earth's a sphere, so lines of longitude actually converge and meet at the poles. But most common map projections, especially the Mercator one, keep longitude lines running perfectly parallel and vertical, like a grid, so they never meet. To force those converging lines to stay parallel, the map has to stretch them apart more and more as you move away from the equator, and that stretching in the east to west direction has to be matched by equally stretching north to south too, otherwise shapes would go all warped and skewed. That's why Greenland looks the size of Africa on a Mercator map even though it's actually about fourteen times smaller.
