A Lua pôde ser vista parecendo mais brilhante e maior na noite de terça-feira.As superluas acontecem quando a Lua está em seu ponto mais próximo da Terra em sua órbita.Um raro eclipse lunar parcial - quando a sombra da Terra cobre parte da Lua - também aconteceu com cerca de 4% do disco da Lua coberto pela escuridão.

A supermoon has lit up the sky across the world coinciding with a rare partial lunar eclipse. The Moon could be seen to appear brighter and bigger on Tuesday night.Supermoons happen when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.A rare partial lunar eclipse - when the Earth's shadow covers part of the Moon - also happened with about 4% of the Moon's disc covered in darkness.

A Super Lua Azul desta Noite, também chamada de Lua Cheia do EsturjãoPor que Super, Azul e Esturjão? A Lua do Esturjão recebeu esse nome em homenagem ao peixe esturjão que era historicamente mais abundante durante esta época do ano nos Grandes Lagos e outros grandes corpos d'água na América do Norte. Tribos indígenas, particularmente aquelas ao redor dos Grandes Lagos e do Lago Champlain, notaram que o esturjão era mais fácil de ser capturado durante o final do verão, coincidindo com a lua cheia em agosto. Por isso, a lua cheia de agosto passou a ser conhecida como Lua do Esturjão.

The Super Blue Moon of Tonight, also called the Full Sturgeon MoonWhy Super, Blue, and Sturgeon? The Sturgeon Moon is named after the sturgeon fish which was historically most abundant during this time of year in the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water in North America. Indigenous tribes, particularly those around the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain, noted that the sturgeon were easiest to catch during the late summer, coinciding with the full moon in August. Hence the August full moon came to be known as the Sturgeon Moon.

Jato gigante da Estação Espacial InternacionalO que é isso no horizonte? Ao circular a Terra na Estação Espacial Internacional no início do mês passado, o astronauta Matthew Dominick viu um tipo incomum de relâmpago logo além da borda da Terra: um jato gigante. O jato poderoso aparece à esquerda da imagem em destaque em vermelho e azul. Relâmpagos de jato gigante só são conhecidos há 23 anos. Os jatos atmosféricos estão associados a tempestades e se estendem para cima em direção à ionosfera da Terra. A parte inferior do quadro mostra a Terra à noite, com a fina atmosfera da Terra tingida de verde pelo brilho atmosférico. As luzes da cidade são visíveis, às vezes resolvidas, mas geralmente criando brilhos brancos difusos nas nuvens intermediárias. Giant Jet from the International Space StationWhat's that on the horizon? When circling the Earth on the International Space Station early last month, astronaut Matthew Dominick saw an unusual type of lightning just beyond the Earth's edge: a gigantic jet. The powerful jet appears on the left of the featured image in red and blue. Giant jet lightning has only been known about for the past 23 years. The atmospheric jets are associated with thunderstorms and extend upwards towards Earth's ionosphere. The lower part of the frame shows the Earth at night, with Earth's thin atmosphere tinted green from airglow. City lights are visible, sometimes resolved, but usually creating diffuse white glows in intervening clouds. The top of the frame reveals distant stars in the dark night sky.
