John of Damascus, His Ancestors, Yazid, and the Umayyad CourtConsidering the previous posts on the Sunni stance regarding Yazid and the John of Damascus/Kalam discussion…Here are some interesting facts that connect the two. Many mistakingly say that John of Damascus was childhood friends with Yazid ibn Muawiyah. This is inaccurate because Yazid was born around 646AD. John was not born until 675AD. The confusion stems from the names. John of Damascus’ birth name is Mansur ibn (son of) Sarjun. His father was named Sarjun ibn Mansur. Meaning John was named after his grandpa.The grandfather of John, Mansur was a man who served as a high ranking Roman (Byzantine) imperial financial officer in Damascus. Ghazali v.
