These parties often take place around the back of a pickup truck or car.But what does the word tailgate actually mean?A tailgate is the hinged panel at the back of a pickup truck. It is a compound word, formed by bringing two words together: tail + gate = tailgateAs a verb, to tailgate can mean to have one of these parties: We tailgated outside the stadium before the game.However, it also has a completely different meaning: to drive dangerously close to the vehicle in front of you.
