Message from Kidu Hailu, Executive Director of Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association, EPA, the Occasion of the World Pharmacists’ Day 2026 On this World Pharmacists Day 2026, we celebrate the vital role of pharmacists in protecting lives, strengthening health systems, and advancing access to quality medicines. The theme for this year “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures” reflects the urgent need to recognize pharmacists not only as medicine experts, but also as key partners in prevention, primary healthcare, and community well-being. As the pharmacy profession continues to grow, the commitment of the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association (EPA) to advocate to expand services and empower pharmacists will help shape healthier, safer and more resilient futures for all. In line with the theme, EPA advocates for the introduction and expansion of Pharmacy-Based immunization, bringing preventive services closer to communities. By enabling pharmacies to support vaccination and health education, pharmacists help reduce barriers to immunization and improve public confidence in preventive care. This initiative strengthens early protection for individuals and supports broader efforts to reduce vaccine-preventable diseases. To ensure sustainable progress and inclusive leadership, EPA is also focused on Empowering Women in Pharmacy. Supporting women pharmacists through opportunities, mentorship and professional advancement strengthens the profession as a whole and promotes equitable participation in decision-making. When women are empowered, communities benefit from stronger leadership, improved service quality and innovative healthcare solutions.Equally important is the effort to integrate Pharmacists into Primary Healthcare. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to contribute to patient counseling, medicine safety, chronic disease management and referral pathways. By formalizing pharmacists’ roles within primary care, we create a more coordinated health system where patients receive timely advice, proper medicine use and continuous follow-up. EPA further strengthens professional capacity through Pharmaceutical Sector Leadership Development, preparing pharmacists and stakeholders to take active roles in health policy, workforce planning and sector improvement. Leadership training ensures that pharmacists can influence safer practice standards and guide reforms that align with national health priorities. To build a strong and competent workforce, EPA is also advocating toward Establishing a Pharmacy Council in Ethiopia, with the aim of enabling the production and maintenance of a qualified pharmacy workforce. A functioning council supports regulation, professional accountability and continuous improvement of pharmacy practice, ensuring that patients receive care from competent professionals. For the next generation, EPA is committed to Establishing a Young Pharmacists Group within the EPA. This platform will address the needs of new graduates and early-career pharmacists, while also onboarding them into leadership positions. Advancing Safe AI for Pediatric Emergency CareSt. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College hosted a two-day workshop on the validation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for pediatric emergency care in collaboration with the LIGHT Lab (Laboratory for Intelligent Global Health and Humanitarian Response Technologies) at EPFL, Switzerland.AI tools developed and tested in high-resource settings need to be evaluated in low-resource settings, where healthcare resources, disease patterns, and clinical practices may differ.
