Although Damascene merchants helped bring Aghabani to wider attention, for generations the craft flourished primarily in the home workshops of Douma, where the skill was passed down from one generation to the next.The process begins by transferring a pattern onto the fabric using carved wooden blocks and temporary indigo dye. The artisan then guides the cloth beneath the needle of an old, manually operated sewing machine, tracing the ornament stitch by stitch. The machine is merely a tool — the final result depends on the eye, skill, and hand of the person guiding it.This is why no two pieces of Aghabani are ever quite the same. The most difficult practice is not to allow ourselves to be overcome by despair.When we are overwhelmed by despair, wherever we look, we see only suffering.We feel as though the worst possible thing is happening to us.
