Allah says in surah al-Nisa':[ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُم بَيْنَ النَّاسِ أَن تَحْكُمُوا بِالْعَدْلِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ نِعِمَّا يَعِظُكُم بِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا ]Allah commands you to render the trusts to their people and that when you judge between people you judge fairly. How excellent is what Allah instructs you to do. Allah is Ever-Hearing, All-Seeing. [58]Commenting on this, al-Shawkani wrote:[هذه الآية من أمهات الآيات المشتملة على كثير من أحكام الشرع ; لأن الظاهر أن الخطاب يشمل جميع الناس في جميع الأمانات ، وقد روي عن علي وزيد بن أسلم وشهر بن حوشب أنها خطاب لولاة المسلمين ، والأول أظهر ، وورودها على سبب كما سيأتي لا ينافي ما فيها من العموم ، فالاعتبار بعموم اللفظ لا بخصوص السبب كما تقرر في الأصول ، وتدخل الولاة في هذا الخطاب دخولا أوليا ، فيجب عليهم تأدية ما لديهم من الأمانات ورد الظلاماتTulayhah Blog

Allah says in surah al-Anfal:[يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن تَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَانًا وَيُكَفِّرْ عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ]O you who have believed, if you have taqwa of Allah He will make a furqan for you and expiate your sins from you and forgive you. And Allah is the owner of a great bounty. [29]Commenting on this, ibn Juzay wrote:[﴿ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَاناً﴾ أي تفرقه بين الحق والباطل، وذلك دليل على أن التقوى تنوِّر القلب، وتشرح الصدر، وتزيد في العلم والمعرفة]"He will make a furqan for you" - i.e. He will make truth distinct from falsehood.This is evidence that taqwa brings light to one's heart, gives peace of heart, and increases one in knowledge and understanding.[al-Tashil li'Uloom al-Tanzil 2/454]Tulayhah Blog

In his biographical entry on ibn 'Abbaas, Imam al-Dhahabi wrote:[صالح بن رستم الخزاز ، عن ابن أبي مليكة ؛ صحبت ابن عباس من مكة إلى المدينة ، فكان إذا نزل ، قام شطر الليل . فسأله أيوب : كيف كانت قراءته ؟ قال : قرأ وجاءت سكرة الموت بالحق ذلك ما كنت منه تحيد فجعل يرتل ويكثر في ذلك النشيج . ]Ibn Abi Mulaykah said: I accompanied ibn 'Abbaas on a journey from Makkah to al-Madinah. When we stopped for the night, he would stand in prayer for half the night.Ayyub asked ibn Abi Mulaykah: What was his recitation like?Ibn Abi Mulaykah replied, He recited:[وَجَاءَتْ سَكْرَةُ الْمَوْتِ بِالْحَقِّ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيدُ ]"And the intoxication of death will come in truth: This is what you have been avoiding" [surah Qaaf ayah 19]and he recited in a slow and measured pace, frequently crying.[Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' 3/342]Tulayhah Blog

Allah says in surah al-Hajj [22]:[إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ الَّذِي جَعَلْنَاهُ لِلنَّاسِ سَوَاءً الْعَاكِفُ فِيهِ وَالْبَادِ ۚ وَمَن يُرِدْ فِيهِ بِإِلْحَادٍ بِظُلْمٍ نُّذِقْهُ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ]Those who disbelieve and hinder people from Allah's path and from al-Masjid al-Haram which We have made for all people - with the resident and the visitor being equal in that. And whoever wishes to do evil and wrongdoing in it, We will make him taste a painful punishment. In surah al-Anfal, Allah says:[وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَأَوْلَادُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ]And know that your wealth and your children are only a trial and that Allah has a great reward with Him. [28]Commenting on this, al-Tabari wrote:[حدثني الحارث قال ، حدثنا عبد العزيز قال ، حدثنا المسعودي ، [ ص: 487 ] عن القاسم ، عن عبد الرحمن ، عن ابن مسعود ، في قوله : " إنما أموالكم وأولادكم فتنة " ، قال : ما منكم من أحد إلا وهو مشتمل على فتنة ، فمن استعاذ منكم فليستعذ بالله من مضلات الفتن . ]Ibn Mas'ood said: None of you are above being susceptible to trials, so whoever seeks refuge let him seek refuge in Allah from misleading trials.[Tafsir al-Tabari 13/487]Tulayhah Blog

Allah said in surah al-Nisa':[أَمْ يَحْسُدُونَ النَّاسَ عَلَىٰ مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ ۖ فَقَدْ آتَيْنَا آلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَآتَيْنَاهُم مُّلْكًا عَظِيمًا]Or do they envy the people over the bounties that Allah gave them? We had already given the family of Ibrahim scripture and wisdom, and We gave them a great kingdom. [54]Commenting on this, al-Shawkani wrote:[قوله : فقد آتينا آل إبراهيم هذا إلزام لليهود بما يعترفون به ولا ينكرونه ; أي : ليس ما آتينا محمدا وأصحابه من فضلنا ببدع حتى يحسدهم اليهود على ذلك ، فهم يعلمون بما آتينا آل إبراهيم ، وهم أسلاف محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم . ]"We have already given the family of Ibrahim" - This functions to hold the Jews to something they acknowledge and do not deny. Allah says in surah al-Anfal:[يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَخُونُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ وَتَخُونُوا أَمَانَاتِكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ]O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trust while you know. [27]Commenting on this, sheikh Faisal Aal Mubarak:[قال ابن زيد في قوله: {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَخُونُواْ اللهَ وَالرَّسُولَ} قال: نهاكم أن تخونوا الله والرسول، كما صنع المنافقون. وقال ابن عباس: {لاَ تَخُونُواْ اللهَ} ، يقول: بترك فرائضه، {وَالرَّسُولَ} ، يقول: بترك سنته، وارتكاب معصيته، {وَتَخُونُواْ أَمَانَاتِكُمْ} والأمانة: الأعمال لا تنقصوها.]Ibn Zayd said: Allah has forbidden you from betraying Allah and the Messenger as the Munafiqoon have done.Ibn 'Abbaas said: "Do not betray Allah" by abandoning His obligations "and the Messenger" by abandoning His Sunnah and committing acts of disobedience "or betray your trust"Tulayhah Blog

Allah says in surah al-Nisa':[إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ]Allah does not wrong anyone even an ant’s weight’s worth [40]Commenting on this, al-Shawkani wrote:[ أي : لا يبخسهم من ثواب أعمالهم ولا يزيد في عقاب ذنوبهم وزن ذرة فضلا عما فوقها ]In other words, He does not diminish the rewards for their good deeds nor add to the punishment for their sins by even so much as an ant's weight worth, let alone anything greater than that.[Fath al-Qadeer 1/299]Tulayhah Blog

Allah says in surah al-Anfal:[وَاذْكُرُوا إِذْ أَنتُمْ قَلِيلٌ مُّسْتَضْعَفُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تَخَافُونَ أَن يَتَخَطَّفَكُمُ النَّاسُ فَآوَاكُمْ وَأَيَّدَكُم بِنَصْرِهِ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ]And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you and then He sheltered you, aided you with His support and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful. Allah says in surah al-Nisa':[وَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا ۖ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا وَبِذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْيَتَامَىٰ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَالْجَارِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْجَارِ الْجُنُبِ وَالصَّاحِبِ بِالْجَنبِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ مُخْتَالًا فَخُورًا]And worship Allah without associating anything as a partner with Him, and be good to your parents as well as to close relations, orphans, the poor, close neighbors, more distant neighbors, the companion at your side, the traveler, and what your right hands possess. Allah does not love those who are arrogant and boastful. In surah al-Anfal, Allah says:[وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَّا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنكُمْ خَاصَّةً ۖ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ]And have taqwa of a tribulation which will not only afflict those of you who were unjust. And know that Allah is severe in punishment. [25]Commenting on this, ibn Juzay wrote:[﴿فِتْنَةً لاَّ تُصِيبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مِنكُمْ خَآصَّةً﴾ أي لا تصيب الظالمين وحدهم، بل تصيب معهم من لم يغير المنكر ولم ينه عن الظلم. وإن كان لم يظلم.]In other words, the tribulation will not only strike the wrongdoers. In surah al-Nisa', Allah says:[وَلِكُلٍّ جَعَلْنَا مَوَالِيَ مِمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَالْأَقْرَبُونَ ۚ وَالَّذِينَ عَقَدَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ فَآتُوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدًا]For everyone We have appointed heirs of what is left by parents and close relatives. And to those with whom you have given your agreement, give them their share. Allah is a witness over all things. [33]Commenting on this, al-Shawkani wrote:[قوله : والذين عقدت أيمانكم المراد بهم موالي الموالاة : كان الرجل من أهل الجاهلية يعاقد الرجل ; أي : يحالفه فيستحق من ميراثه نصيبا ، ثم ثبت في صدر [ ص: 295 ] الإسلام بهذه الآية ، ثم نسخ بقوله : وأولو الأرحام بعضهم أولى ببعض]"And to those with whom you have given your agreement" - this is referring to allies who have swore a mutual pact. Allah says in surah al-Nisa':[إِن تَجْتَنِبُوا كَبَائِرَ مَا تُنْهَوْنَ عَنْهُ نُكَفِّرْ عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَنُدْخِلْكُم مُّدْخَلًا كَرِيمًا]If you avoid the major sins that you have been forbidden from, We will expiate your minor sins from you and admit you to a gracious entrance. In surah al-Anfal, Allah said:[يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ ۖ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَحُولُ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَأَنَّهُ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ]O you who have believed, respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah comes between a person and his heart and that you will be gathered to Him. [24]Commenting on this, al-Tabari wrote:[إن ذلك [ ص: 472 ] خبر من الله عز وجل أنه أملك لقلوب عباده منهم ، وأنه يحول بينهم وبينها إذا شاء ، حتى لا يقدر ذو قلب أن يدرك به شيئا من إيمان أو كفر ، أو أن يعي به شيئا ، أو أن يفهم ، إلا بإذنه ومشيئته ]This is Allah telling us that He has more control over people's hearts than they do and they He comes between them and their hearts as He wishes, such that the owner of a heart is not able to use it to grasp or hold
