I don’t dance. Unless I’m coerced by an overenthusiastic (and usually inebriated) friend, in which case I reluctantly drag myself to whatever serves as a dance floor and perform something akin to Chandler Bing’s routine.The article I came across today is dedicated to this aggravating activity — dancing, that is. Apparently, it is not merely a pathway to embarrassing yourself publicly but also an effective way to stave off dementia. And while I have a complex relationship with my body, my brain is my best friend, so naturally, the article piqued my interest.I’m not joining ballet classes any time soon. I teach writing.Mostly, of course, I teach exam writing for C2 Proficiency, as this is naturally what most of my students are interested in. There are exceptions, though. One of them is a CPE holder who wants to push her skills further, prudently acknowledging that there is more to the English language than an A on a certificate.Yesterday, we had a class in a coffee shop. The lesson focused on showing a character’s feelings without explicitly naming them, as well as on the internal coherence of a text: how writing flows at the level of ideas rather than merely through functional language.It is very tempting to begin yet another sentence with a linker, isn’t it? A few days ago, we explored the #OwnVoices movement through Zoë Marriott’s deeply personal account of writing The Moonlit Maze — and the unexpected journey of recognising her own autistic experience in her fiction.Today, we’re looking at the movement from a rather different angle. I came across yet another article I immediately wanted to share it with you. It’s about #OwnVoices — a term originally coined by YA author Corinne Duyvis for stories in which characters share an identity or experience of marginalisation with their author. As someone with ADHD, I was instantly hooked.Zoë Marriott’s, the author of the article, explores what #OwnVoices can look like throgh her own experience writing The Moonlit Maze. She initially struggled with one of her protagonists, only to realise that the character’s behaviours and experiences were uncomfortably familiar — because she had unknowingly been writing the character as autistic, while simultenuously coming to recognise her own autism. It’s a lovely reflection on one of the strangest things about writing (and, in my opinion, reading, too): sometimes the characters we struggle with most are the ones who are telling us
