Cursing YazidUnlike the Shia, Sunnis do not ritually mourn the killing of the Prophet's ﷺ grandson Husayn at the hands of Yazid ibn Mu'awiya.Nevertheless, Sunnis do see this as a tragic event.The traditional position of Ahl al-Sunna is to hate Yazid, or even to ritually curse him.For example, the Hanbali scholar Ibn al-Jawzi (d.1201) defended the cursing of Yazid in a famous treatise titled: al-Radd ʿalā l-mutaʿaṣṣib al-ʿanīd al-māniʿ min dhamm Yazīd (The refutation of the zealous and deviant scholar who forbids the censure of Yazīd).This hostile stance towards Yazid can be traced back to scholars of the Salaf like Ibn Hanbal. CONTEMPORARY WAHHABISM: A RELIGION OF YAZIDISMContemporary Wahhabism has suppressed traditional Sunni hostility towards Yazid (who killed the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ and fired catapults at the Ka'ba).There are several reasons for this, all tied to Saudi geopolitics.(1) Yazid was an evil and tyrannical ruler. In order to delegitimize criticism of Saudi rules, contemporary Wahhabis teach that one may not criticize a ruler no matter how evil and tyrannical he is (e.g., a ruler who abolishes the Sharia, allies with Israel, etc.). Indeed, Yazid killed the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ Husayn for criticizing him and rising up against him.(2) Yazid attacked and killed the family members of the Prophet ﷺ to take control of the Hijaz and maintain power.
