It was the central theme of Muammar Gaddafi’s famous 2008 speech where he ripped pages from the UN charter while at the podium.

Around one million Iranians were exposed to poison gas. Halabja was gassed. The US still handed Saddam satellite intelligence.Declassified files prove it. Nobody has ever been punished.

Happy Birthday to the Brazilian Marxist educator and philosopher Paulo Freire! He is known for Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970), which theorized how oppressed people could be empowered by revolutionary education.Aftr the US-backed military coup of 1 April 1964 Freire was arrested, interrogated and jailed for 70 days. The military called him an "international subversive" and "a traitor to Christ and the Brazilian people", while a judge accused him of plotting to turn Brazil into a communist state. He was forced into exile for 16 years.Freire argued that education could be a tool for social change. Despite repression and censorship from right-wing forces in Brazil and worldwide, his work continues to inspire educators and activists in the struggle for social justice.

Today, we remember Pavlos Fyssas, the Greek anti-fascist rapper killed by members of the fascist Golden Dawn party on September 18, 2013. He was stabbed twice in the heart at a cafe in Keratsini while police stood by and watched.His murder sparked massive protests and a historic trial. In October 2020, 68 Golden Dawn defendants were convicted of running a criminal organization. It was the largest Nazi trial since Nuremberg. Twenty thousand people gathered outside the courthouse to hear the verdict.Last week, Ilias Kassidiaris, a leading Golden Dawn figure convicted of directing the fascist organization, was released from prison after serving his 13-year sentence. Within hours, he announced plans to establish a new far-right party.The lesson is clear. No court verdict will eliminate fascism if the material conditions that generate it remain unaddressed.The struggle continues.

Today we remember Víctor Jara, renowned Chilean musician and member of the Chilean Communist Party, tortured and executed by the US-backed Pinochet dictatorship on this day in 1973. His torturers crushed his hands and mocked him, forcing him to sing and play the guitar. Did you know that the CIA once orchestrated the execution of today’s DR Congo’s first Prime Minister by a firing squad? On this day in 1961, Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of the Congo, was executed by a firing squad following assassination plots concocted by the US and Belgian governments.Lumumba’s anti-imperialism and vision of a united Congo made him an adversary of both Belgium and US imperialism. Although the CIA ordered his assassination, they weren’t able to carry it out themselves.Instead, Washington and Brussels secretly funneled cash and aid to rival politicians who organized a coup and arrested Lumumba. He was then beaten, tortured, and killed.

Allende and the Popular Unity chose not to. It never armed the working class against the reactionary bourgeoisie.Allende´s ‘Peaceful Road to Socialism’ was ultimately crushed by the state institutions and military Chileans were told they should trust. NEW ARTICLE: An earthquake in 1923 destroyed Tokyo and killed more than 105,000 people.In the three weeks that followed, the military, the police and armed militias killed around 6,000 more.Mostly Koreans, but also Chinese workers, and Japanese socialists and anarchists. They were killed on the strength of a rumor the Home Ministry itself put on the wires.Japan has never investigated. Today, 82 years ago, the Nazis executed Ernst Thälmann, chairman of Germany's Communist Party, on Hitler's personal order.What's less known: from his cell, he secretly wrote to Stalin, hoping to be traded to Moscow.
