The Nazca Lines are a series of geometric shapes and zoomorphic figures etched into the sand of the Nazca desert south of Lima. The most famous drawings include a hummingbird, a monkey, a condor, a spider and a parrot. In total, there are around 70 plant and animal figures plus over 800 straight lines and 300 geometric designs.The area surrounding the Nazca Lines was first excavated by the Peruvian archaeologist Toribio Mejía Xesspe, but it wasn’t until the advent of modern aviation in the 1930s that the figures were identified, since it’s impossible to see them at ground level.Dozens more were discovered in subsequent decades and, in fact, are still being discovered today. Since few other traces remain of the culture who produced these massive designs, the exact purpose and origin of the Nazca Lines has been hotly debated by researchers.Mysteries of our planet

The fresco shows a youthful, clean-shaven Jesus dressed in a toga and carrying a goat across his shoulders -- an uncommon representation in the region that reflects Roman artistic influence.According to lead archaeologist Gulsen Kutbay, the fresco may be a unique example within Anatolia. A forgotten Belgian genius dreamed up the internet over 100 years agoPaul Otlet, a Belgian bibliographer and entrepreneur who, in 1934, laid out a plan for a global network of “electric telescopes” that would allow anyone in the world to access to a vast library of books, articles, photographs, audio recordings, and films.Otlet explored the possibilities of storing data on microfilm and making it searchable, with a web of documents connected via a sophisticated linking system. Otlet also wrote about wireless networks, speech recognition, and social network-like features that would allow individuals to “participate, applaud, give ovations, sing in the chorus.” He even described a mechanism for transmitting taste and smell.Unfortunately, Otlet's vision was shattered by the Nazi invasion of Belgium in 1940, and he died soon after. Luckily, he's now getting some credit for those ideas.
