Yuri Gagarin sang this song by Dmitri ShostakovichThe day after the first cosmonaut in space returned to Earth, Soviet newspapers reported that Yuri Gagarin had sung his favorite song during his flight: ‘The Motherland Hears, the Motherland Knows’… It was written in 1950 by composer Dmitri Shostakovich and poet Yevgeny Dolmatovsky and was inspired by a true story. During World War II, Dolmatovsky, then a war correspondent, was returning from behind the front lines by plane. Through the headphones the pilot had given him, he could hear music being broadcast by the airfield’s radio station. It was then that the poet came up with the idea of writing a “beacon song”, the call signs of which would guide returning planes back to the airfield.Shostakovich and Dolmatovsky revisited this idea while working on the musical score for a play. The production never took place, but the song took on a life of its own. Its first "space journey" took place in 1957. The first bars of ‘The Motherland Hears. The Motherland Knows’ became the theme music for the All-Union Radio's ‘Latest News’ segment: for the broadcast, they were combined with signals from the first artificial satellite. A few years later, Yuri Gagarin sang this “navigation song”. What’s inside the luxurious Italian Pavilion of the Ostankino Estate?The wing of Count Sheremetev’s Moscow estate has reopened to the public after 13 years of restoration.Count Nikolai Sheremetev lived in the 18th century and was a major statesman, but he is mostly remembered as a great lover of art and theater. He owned the luxurious suburban Kuskovo Estate and an equally luxurious wooden palace in Moscow – Ostankino.🏛The western part of this palace is known as the ‘Italian Pavilion’ and its decor is breathtaking. Ancient sculptures, gilding, stucco molding, vaulted ceilings, ceiling panels and chandeliers. 🕯Restorers spent many years painstakingly restoring everything down to the authentic fittings and their particular pride is that they were able to restore the original 18th-century French wallpaper.The pavilion has a grand reception hall, around the perimeter of which four study rooms are located.In 2025, the Egyptian Pavilion, the eastern wing of the palace, was reopened after restoration. Did you know that the Bolshoi Theater hosted masquerades?Muscovites enjoyed themselves not only in restaurants and taverns, but also in theaters. A native of the village of Novominskaya in the Kuban region, he served as the bodyguard to Empress Maria Feodorovna – the mother of the last Russian tsar – and faithfully performed his duty until the very end of her life.
