Four Cardinal PhasesIn our research we found a magnitude dependent link between the largest earthquakes in history and the four lunar phases. See our Github repo.As we considered the possibility of a parallel with the four seasons and associated changes in Earth's larger cycle around the Sun, we also explored the galactic year and potential traces on Earth that might indicate a "galactic seasonal" rhythm. We shared our findings on Github: https://github.com/ssgeos/biodiversity-galactic-cycle

The repo has been updated with all M ≥ 8.5 events from the GEM-GHEC catalog and a peer-reviewed paper (->1361). With this update the p-value dropped from 0.028 to 0.008. Stats regarding phase preference were also added, showing an obvious preference for Full Moons. https://github.com/ssgeos/great-earthquakes-lunar-phase-statistics

We published new statistics about the largest earthquakes (M≥8.5) in history and lunar phases. Dr. Susan Hough's 2018 paper is correct for a M ≥ 8.0 threshold (random occurrence), but with rising magnitude a shift is observed towards the 4 phases! https://github.com/ssgeos/great-earthquakes-lunar-phase-statistics

A significant seismic increase occurred from 20 to 26 March 2026, counting eight M 6+ earthquakes, three of which M 6.5+ peaking M 7.5 on the 24th. Typical temporal clustering aligning with converging planetary and lunar geometry, whereby the Moon is the most significant seismic modulator.

The usual clustering of stronger (M≥5.5) #earthquakes from 5-14 February occurred almost symmetrically with the geometric peaks that we discussed when this time-frame commenced. These seismic bursts demonstrate seismic modulation related to planetary and lunar geometry.

According to a 2019 study (see link) the Eastern Mediterranean region has been affected by 10 Extreme Water Events (EWE) or tsunamis from large earthquakes along the Hellenic Arc and Santorini eruptions in the last 7500 years. This implies an average ~750 years recurrence interval. The youngest EWE occurred in 365 AD, which is almost 1700 years ago. These EWEs do not just impact Crete's coastal areas, but the entire Eastern Mediterranean, including the Adriatic Sea. Seismic and volcanic potential around Crete should not be underestimated. Most recent seismic activity at the Hellenic arc peaked M 5.0 on 7 February 2026. https://openscience.ub.uni-mainz.de/items/5a65e5d6-2888-4c0b-bac2-70dde8ee2355

Thus far in this time-frame (31 December - 8 January) three temporal #earthquake clusters occurred matching the #lunar (green) peaks (as anticipated). Strongest event thus far was the M 6.5 Mexico tremor at Full Moon.

While mainstream consensus traditionally claims that planetary/lunar tides have little/no influence on seismic activity, more recent peer-reviewed studies challenge the paradigm, some directly confirming our own research results. One of the biggest problems in earthquake risk countries is the weakness of unreinforced masonry (URM) and reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. As an example we list the Mediterranean countries Italy, Greece and Turkey.Italy: ~70–80% pre-modern codes; heavy reliance on vulnerable URM in historic/rural areas.Greece: ~80% of buildings pre-1985 code; many low-rise masonry/RC in urban and island villages.Turkey: Large pre-1999/2018 code stock; "soft-story" RC common; 1.5M+ at-risk in Istanbul alone.Much more effort is needed to make buildings more earthquake-proof. This applies to most seismically active countries.

The three lunar peaks (green) on the SSGI-graph since the 21st, each show tight temporal clustering of stronger (M≥5.5) earthquakes, with each cluster peaking M6 (M 6.5, M 6.0 and M 6.6 respectively).

An obvious cluster of stronger (M ≥ 5.5) #earthquakes occurred yesterday following the sequence of planetary and lunar geometry from 9 to 12 May. Stronger tremors tend to occur in temporal clusters (without spatial component), i.e in a short time in different regions. For a detailed analysis of this #SSGI graph, check out https://youtube.com/watch?v=ezv20mRKdSg

The strongest #earthquake in the last two weeks was M 6.6 at the Southeast Indian Ridge. Note the temporal clustering of M ≥ 5.5 earthquakes depicted on the #SSGI graph. Stronger earthquakes tend to occur in clusters, rather than on average.

A 2004 study estimated a 35-70% probability of a Mw > 7.0 earthquake in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul in the next 30 years (2004-2034). The seismic gap is indicated on the map by red arrows. Based on this study we can conclude that there is reason for concern. https://earth-planets-space.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40623-017-0648-9

On this day in 1906 San Francisco was devastated by a M 7.9 #earthquake. At that time, 3 M ≥ 7.0 earthquakes occurred in just 5 days.To date 1906 is seismically still the most active year on record with no less than 22 magnitude ≥ 7.0 and 7 magnitude ≥ 7.8 earthquakes, 5(!) of which reached magnitude ≥ 8.At the time, Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System. Large earthquakes occurred repeatedly when Earth and the Moon made critical geometry with these outer planets. The San Francisco earthquake is just one example.Uranus and Neptune are on opposite sides of the Solar System roughly every 172 years. https://ssgeos.org/archive/a1906/19060418131226-offshore-northern-california-79.htm
