A dejected 22-year-old Alfred Michel of Jagdgeschwader 53 surveys the remains of his Messerschmitt Bf-109G-14 “Blue 2,” surrounded by soldiers of the U.S. 90th Infantry Division on January 1, 1945. It had been Michel’s first combat sortie, and it would also be his last.Michel belonged to 16./JG 53 and had taken off as part of Operation Bodenplatte, the Luftwaffe’s massive New Year’s Day attempt to destroy Allied air power on the ground. His unit was headed toward Metz-Frescaty, where JG 53 would destroy numerous American P-47 Thunderbolts.Michel never made it that far. His Bf-109 suffered engine damage near Waldweisdorf, forcing the inexperienced pilot to belly-land. He escaped with little more than a nasty bump to his forehead, apparently from striking the gunsight during the landing. WWII Mariupol, Ukrainian SSR, October 1941.Between October 8, 1941, and September 10, 1943, Mariupol was secured by German Wehrmacht troops. During the Battle of Berdyansk, Mariupol, and Taganrog, officer Max Wünsche commanded various Waffen-SS units. The music corps of the Leibstandarte SS "Adolf Hitler" reached the port city in 1941. In the same year, General Eberhard von Mackensen and his Panzer Corps, also as part of the Russian campaign, advanced through Mariupol to Rostov-on-Don. The last pitched battle between Scotland and England before the Union of the Crowns, it was part of the conflict known as the Rough Wooing.
