Abandoned Chacaltaya Ski Resort, La Paz, Bolivia 🇧🇴The world’s highest ski resort was deserted after an 18,000-year-old glacier melted away.At 17,519 feet above sea level, the Chacaltaya Ski Resort was higher than the North Base Camp of Mount Everest. For decades it held the record as the world’s highest ski resort, and the resort’s restaurant is still recognized by Guinness as the highest restaurant in the world.With the ice and snow melted, the skiers naturally stopped coming. The resort was soon shut down and abandoned, and its ski lifts shut down. Sami, Greece 🇬🇷A spectacular cave and a beguiling lake.Sami boasts two magnificent geological oddities: Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake. The short distance between the two allows tourists to visit both of these natural wonders in one day.Between 11am and 1pm on sunny days, Lake Melissani is an otherworldly blue.Those who have been fortunate enough to visit Drogarati Cave are treated to its beautiful stalagmites and stalactites.The largest room in the cave, “Sala of Apotheosis,” is 900 meters square and illuminated. Castor River Shut-Ins, Amidon Memorial Conservation Area, Fredericktown, Missouri 🇺🇸These pink granite water slides are the result of millions of years of erosion.A shut-in is a place where water has carved smooth “slides” through soft rock, in this case Missouri Pink granite, and forms a canyon through which the waters flow. Mawaki Site, Noto, Japan 🇯🇵The site of a prehistoric settlement spanning millennia, complete with a reconstructed timber circle.The Mawaki Site was continuously inhabited for over four millennia between 6,000-2,300 years ago, bearing witness to the dawn and twilight of the prehistoric Jōmon period of Japan.Discovered in 1982-1983 during the pre-construction survey for a canal, the Mawaki Site contains several shell middens, mass graves, and the remains of a timber circle consisting of 10 chestnut poles, which has since been reconstructed on the site.The diverse finds from the site include countless earthenware vessels, terra cotta idols, and skeletal remains.Another fascinating artifact excavated from the Mawaki Site is a fragment of an ancient clay mask, the oldest of its kind known in Japan, likely once used in shamanistic rituals to ward off evil.📍Location: in the Noto

Tourlitis Lighthouse, Andros, Greece 🇬🇷Rising up out of a weather-worn stone spire, the beacon looks like something straight out of a fantasy novel.The lighthouse was first built in 1897. The lighthouse was eventually rebuilt in the early 1990s . The replica became Greece’s first automated lighthouse, eliminating the need for an onsite keeper to operate the light. Gourgue d'Asque, Asque, France 🇫🇷A French valley with forests so lush it was nicknamed "the Small Amazonia of the Pyrenees."In addition to covering rocks and trees, lichens hang down from branches like tentacles, adding to the otherworldly feel of the place. Ponte da Misarela (Misalera Bridge), Montalegre, Portugal 🇵🇹Local lore says the devil built this beautiful medieval bridge to help a fleeing bandit.According to local lore, a criminal was in dire need of a way to cross the river while fleeing the nearby village. He summoned the devil, who kindly said he’d help the man—for the small price of his soul, of course. The man agreed, and the devil created a temporary bridge that vanished before those pursuing the convict could cross as well.Supposedly, the bandit felt so remorseful he later sought out a priest to repent. Ráday Palace, Pécel, Hungary 🇭🇺A seemingly unassuming palace near Budapest hides a stupendously decorated hall.Ráday Palace sits in the middle of Pécel, and from outside it looks like a typical old mansion. This building was erected during the 18th century as the residence of the noble Ráday family.The ground floor of the palace has various decorated halls, that showcase the history of this once-thriving cultural hotspot, and it is linked to a basement hosting a traditional kitchen with many old tools. However, the main attraction is the large main hall on the upper floor. Here, a breathtaking series of 18th-century frescoes depicting the allegories of science and arts, and various scenes from ancient mythology and Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Teddy’s Juke Joint, Zachary, Louisiana 🇺🇸One of the last remaining venues on the Old Chitlin’ Circuit is a kaleidoscopic music hall at the end of a dirt road.Lloyd “teddy” johnson, proprietor of Teddy’s Juke Joint, will tell you he’s only ever had one address. Ferdinand’s opulent tastes were imposed on the builders and designers, creating a schizophrenic manse that, at least from the outside, seemed to indulge any and all of the king’s passing tastes.The interior of the palace was no less opulent or eclectic.
