US Treasury Yields Surge to Highest Since 2007 as Bond Selloff DeepensUS Treasury yields surged on Wednesday as stronger-than-expected US economic data, higher oil prices and weak demand at a $70 billion five-year note auction intensified the bond selloff, Bloomberg reported. The five-year yield rose above 5% for the first time since 2007, while the 10-year yield climbed nearly 17 basis points to 5.13% and the 30-year yield reached about 5.4%, both near their highest levels since 2007. The five-year auction cleared at 5.033%, more than 3 basis points above the expected level and the second-weakest result in data going back to 2018. Rate swaps now fully price in three additional 25-basis-point Fed hikes over the next year, with significant hedging for a fourth. The selloff also weighed on equities, with the S&P 500 falling 0.8%. — link

Tether CEO Says Company Refused to Apply for EU MiCA License Over Stablecoin Reserve RuleTether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company refused to apply for an EU MiCA license because of the rule requiring major stablecoin issuers to hold at least 60% of their reserves in commercial bank deposits. The remarks follow a proposal by the European Central Bank and other EU central banks to remove the requirement, citing the risk that volatile stablecoin deposits could expose banks to sudden withdrawals. The central banks instead recommend liquidity requirements based on assets maturing within one to five working days. The proposed change has not yet been adopted. — link

Arthur Hayes Says Any AI Bust Could End in Money Printing, Boosting BitcoinBitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes argued in his latest essay, Safety First, that moves by U.S. AI labs including Anthropic and OpenAI to slow AGI development on safety grounds may instead reflect weaker-than-expected demand for AI at current prices. Hayes said reduced training spending could undermine demand for data centers and chips, putting pressure on more than $1 trillion of investment-grade debt and hundreds of billions of dollars in lower-rated loans tied to AI infrastructure. He argues that resulting credit stress could ultimately force the U.S. government either to become a “compute buyer of last resort” or support insurers exposed to AI debt — outcomes he expects would increase dollar liquidity and benefit Bitcoin and other crypto assets. — link
