✞Similarly, at the time, when the Israelites were taken captive and taken to Nineveh, a kind person named Tobit was amongst them. This kind man, before captivity had true adoration, gave tithes and was compassionate to the poor.✞After captivity, when the people mingled with the gentiles, he kept his purity and worshipped God. St. Tobit, especially, would not eat before he buried a person he found dead. And because of this, he fasted every day.✞When he was 58 years of age, he was blinded. Because he suffered much, he pleaded for his death. Also, Sarah wished for her death as she was saddened and suffering from the possession of a demon called Asmodeus that had killed her 7 husbands.✞But God sent His angel, Raphael, who took the likeness of Azariah that blessed the union of Tobias and Sarah. He also sent the demon to the deep. And the eyes of Tobit were healed with the bile of a fish and 100 years were added to his life. St. Tobit passed away on this day after foretelling many prophecies.✞✞✞ Abba Agathon the Hermit ✞✞✞ => I don’t assume that there is any Christian who doesn’t know this Saint. He was a great saint, monastic and man of God that held a rock in his mouth for 30 years to discontinue his tongue from speaking evil.✞The scholars describe him as follows, “Pile upon pile is his holiness to the extent of sighting [God].” His patience, compassion, quietness and deeds are beyond speech. Feasts of Meskerem 16✞✞✞On this day we commemorate the Edifying of Jerusalem (Consecration of the Churches at Jerusalem), St. Tobit and Abba Agathon the Hermit✞✞✞✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞✞✞✞The Edifying of Jerusalem ✞✞✞ => Jerusalem has been a holy city of God in the times of the Old and New Testaments. ‘Uru’ means “city” and ‘salim’ "peace". So, directly it means “City of Peace”, “City of Christ”.✞The word Jerusalem openly indicates the Holy City but symbolically, typologically and allegorically, it represents and is a name of, the Church, the Heavenly Kingdom and the true city of peace - the Virgin Mary. It was the great priest Melchizedek that established Jerusalem as a city and he was in it titled as the “King of Sali(e)m”.✞This Holy City, as God manifested in grace in it in Old Testament times and since the Saints of the Old Testament existed in it, was sanctified. It was further blessed, when in the New Testament times our Creator Jesus Christ descended from heaven (was incarnate), lived in it and did His salvific work for 33 years and 3 months, and also since it was a home for the Virgin Mary and many saints.✞ Up to now, many people, from different parts of the world, with much hardship and cost, go to see it. Our early fathers have also paid to the extent of shedding their blood to salute this Holy City.✞Let’s go to our main point and see the edifying of Jerusalem. Jerusalem has been built many times after destructions by the gentiles. We celebrate today not the rebuilding of the city itself but the construction of many churches at once in a manner not seen in the history of the city before. If asked, “How did that happen?”✞300 years after the ascension of Christ, St. Helena rose for the Church inspired with good thought.✞After the Council of Nicaea ended, in the 20th year of the reign of Constantine, around the year 327 A.D., she went to Jerusalem to find the Holy Cross.✞Let the history of how she discovered the Cross wait for tomorrow but after she discovered It, she agreed with her son to build churches all over the city.✞Because Abba Macarius (Archbishop of Jerusalem) counseled her saying, “Let me advise you! Build the Church with durable rock but give the gold and silver to the poor” after seeing that she had brought for the construction much gold, silver and gem, it was a great elation for the destitute of the surrounding. Numerous soldiers and thousands of workers started building 80 churches diligently.✞The work was very exhausting as it was elaborate and demanding. Because St. Helena wanted to cover the city with churches, the number of churches she ordered to be built reached 80. And these were built upon the place that Christ from His conception to His ascension walked on and the places the Mother of Light also walked on.✞ The main ones included Bethlehem, Jordan, Mt. Lebanon, Mt. Tabor, Mt. Olive, Calvary (Golgotha), Gethsemane, Bethsaida and the Upper Room (‘Tsreha Tsion’). The 80 churches were built without the poor going hungry, without the laborers being deprived of their wages, and by the aid of the Creator, in 10 years.✞A jubilation, by the grace of God, unseen in the city before took place, after Emperor St. Constantine called the great Archbishops of the world who came together until Meskerem 15 (September 25) and celebrated the consecration of all the churches at once with much hymns.✞Jerusalem remained well embroidered until the time of tribulation (the rise of unbelievers).✞✞✞St. Tobit (Righteous Prophet)✞✞✞ =>Before the birth of Christ, when Israelites became too sinful God would bring about an enemy and give them to captivity; and when they repented He took them out with great signs. Amen!✞✞✞✞On this day God made a wonder through the hands of Basil.✞✞✞ Saint Basil (Basilius) of Caesarea ✞✞✞ => The great scholar St. Basil is one of the scholars called the hierarchs. His father was called Esdros (there are those that say Basil) and his mother Emmelia. Husband and wife, from their blessed marriage, begot 5 sons and 1 daughter. What’s amazing was that the girl (St. Macrina) was an ascetic and the 5 boys became bishops.✞ St. Basil was the eldest.
