On the morning of September 22, Telegram Desktop updated its emoji set to Unicode 17. There are eight new symbols: distorted face, ballet, orca, hairy creature, landslide, fight cloud, trombone, and treasure chest.
Unicode itself lists 163 new symbols in its seventeenth version, but this includes skin tone variations and pairs like wrestlers in all combinations. There are exactly eight standalone images.
On desktop, emoji are rendered not by the system font, but by the client itself. The list of symbols is located in the adjacent lib_ui library, from which eight sheets of 512 images are printed. Therefore, in the commit, all sheets are changed at once, and the cache version increases from nine to ten — otherwise, the old ones would remain on screen.
Downloadable sets have also been re-released: Android, Twemoji, JoyPixels. None of this is yet available in the released version — the latest, 7.2.9, was released on September 17.
