In October 2026, 2,367 commits were made to Telegram's open repositories. This is the second highest result in history, following August 2026 (2,409). October surpassed all other months of 2026 in terms of changed lines of code (843,659) and number of contributors (63). From January to October, a total of 14,996 commits were accumulated: this is more than any full year since 2013, even though there are still two months left in 2026.
What is Counted
The counter on the Telegram updates page tracks public repositories of the organizations TelegramMessenger, telegramdesktop, desktop-app, tdlib, and TGX-Android, as well as DrKLO's repositories and personal repositories of official client developers — for example, the web versions tweb and telegram-tt, and the wallet engine wallet-engine. Currently, 105 repositories are being monitored. TON network repositories from the ton-blockchain organization are not included in the count.
A commit is a single recorded code change. Only default branch commits are counted, excluding merge commits, and the month is determined by the author's date in UTC. The same commit in multiple repositories is counted only once. Lines represent the sum of added and deleted lines, excluding vendored third-party code, translations, and binary files, and are capped at 5,000 lines per commit. Therefore, importing an entire repository in a single commit does not set a record.
The commit counts for each of the seven largest repositories for October and August match GitHub's search results exactly.
Where Commits Were Made in October
| Repository | Commits in October |
|---|---|
| tdesktop | 847 |
| Telegram-iOS | 405 |
| tweb | 208 |
| tdlib/td | 201 |
| Telegram-macOS | 136 |
| Telegram-X | 122 |
| telegram-tt | 70 |
Telegram Desktop had the most commits. On October 9, its version 7.3 was released with a one-word description, "Money.", and by October 29, three more 7.3.x updates and a 7.3.4 beta were released. The word wallet appears in the titles of 75 of tdesktop's 847 October commits, and gram in 29.
Telegram for iOS made 405 commits, compared to 157 in August. Among them are the description and plan for message widgets and HTML mini-pages directly in the chat bubble — both dated October 13.
Telegram for macOS had no commits in the counter for August: the client's previous open repository is currently unavailable, and a new one appeared in October. Its first commit with client code is dated October 20, and since October 23, pull requests from third-party developers have been accepted. Of the 136 October commits, 131 came via pull requests, and 5 directly from the team's account. In total, 113 pull requests were merged into the repository in October, 24 of them on October 24.
Why the Number of Contributors Doubled
In October, 63 contributors were active in the repositories — compared to 29 in August and 34 in September. This growth was mainly driven by the macOS client: 23 contributors made commits to its repository, and 19 of them had not previously committed to any Telegram repository. In total, there were 38 new contributors in October.
For 2026, there are 142 contributors. This is twice as many as in 2025 (71), and more than the previous record of 91 in 2020.
Why August Might Yield to October
Figures for previous months grow retroactively. A commit is counted in the month it was authored, but it may take weeks for it to be merged into the default branch. Since the end of August, August has gained 309 commits — these were merged in September and October. In tdesktop alone, 640 previously authored commits were merged in October: 479 from September, 122 from August, and 39 from July.
On its last day, August, by this estimate, ended with approximately 2,100 commits, while October ended with 2,367. October's figure may also increase in the coming weeks.
How 2026 Compares to Previous Years
| Year | Commits | Changed Lines | Contributors |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 9,109 | 1,553,695 | 78 |
| 2025 | 9,247 | 1,401,144 | 71 |
| 2026, January–October | 14,996 | 3,982,714 | 142 |
Previous maximums were 11,109 commits in 2021, 2,140,949 lines in 2019, and 91 contributors in 2020. 2026 surpasses 2025 by 1.6 times in commits, 2.8 times in lines, and twice in contributors.
Monthly commits increased for most of the year: 896 in January, 1,146 in April, 1,570 in June, 2,409 in August. There were two dips — February (830) and September (1,771). In August, in addition to the release of Telegram Desktop 7.1, the wallet-engine on Rust appeared — 190 commits from August 14 to 28.
Commit counts are as of October 31, 23:59 UTC; lines and contributors are as of 21:25 UTC on the same day.
