Wallet in Telegram, the crypto wallet from The Open Platform (TOP), was renamed to Walt on September 28. According to the team, the wallet's place in Telegram settings is being transferred to the built-in Gram Wallet. Walt will remain a separate application for trading, investments, and cross-network transfers — now accessible at @walt.
For existing wallet users, nothing changes. Funds, accounts, and settings remain in place; no migration is required.
Who is Responsible for What Now
The letter from TOP founder Andrew Rogozov assigns distinct roles to the two wallets. Gram Wallet is the entry point for everyone: to buy Gram, send gifts, buy Telegram Stars, transfer money to friends, and pay within Telegram applications. Walt is for those who need more: trading, investments, assets across different networks, and transfers between them.
The roles are interconnected, however. As stated in the letter, Gram Wallet can be topped up via Walt's infrastructure.
What Changes for Users
The name, logo, and account addresses are changing: the bot is now @walt, the news channel is @walt_news, and support is @walt_support. In practice, @walt leads to the same bot as @wallet: they share the same description and display name, which on the day of the announcement was still "Wallet". The news channel, with 3.5 million subscribers, is accessible at @walt_news, without changing its previous name.
The team specifically warns: they will never initiate contact with users or ask for login credentials. The name change provides a convenient opportunity for fake "Walt" accounts, so any message from such an account without your prior request is a sign of a fake.
What Walt Promises Next
The letter mentions two upcoming launches. The first is crypto cards, allowing assets to be spent outside Telegram. The second is AI-powered trading: a conversational interface that analyzes the market, assesses portfolio risk, suggests trades, and executes them on perpetual futures. No timelines were provided for either.
How This Came About
The spot in the settings was gradually being vacated. Telegram announced its own wallet, which appeared with an interface in the macOS beta. The built-in wallet was also included in the TON Connect config with a temporary redirect to @wallet.
On the eve of the announcement, September 27, the wallet_available key with a value of false appeared in Telegram's test config, while the production config had no wallet keys at all.
